An Interview With The Head Wizard

Lurking behind the veil of giant dragon miniatures, books about scimitar-wielding elves, and trading cards of every color of the rainbow, you’ll find a corporate monster of cubical mazes and lunch meetings at top game makers Wizards of the Coast. The newshounds over a ICV2.com recently did an interview with Loren Greenwood, CEO of Wizards of the Coast (and no relation to Ed), who talked a bit about the business side of the company.
Sadly, the piece is kind of boring. It’d be hard to mistake Greenwood for much of a gamer, as the interview responses all have the generic enthusiasm of a salesman who doesn’t quite know what he’s selling. To summarize, WotC will continue to do everything it does now, they could do a game related to Marvel comics but it doesn’t sound like they are, and the upcoming Dragonlance movie will be cool because “everybody loves dragons.”
Does anyone else miss the days when Peter Adkison was in charge over there? I know it’s unrealistic to think that a multi-million dollar company has many altruistic plans besides profit on its mind, but at least when WotC started out it seemed like they were having fun. There’s still a lot of passionate, talented folks at Wizards, but it’s just discouraging to see that seemingly missing from the higher ranks.
Good job to ICV2 for the story, though, you far too rarely see the people behind the games. You can check out the entire interview with Loren Greenwood and his suit here.
