The Bridge to Terabithia: It's a Trap!

I saw this on television last night and was shocked that it had slipped under my radar. "A cool fantasy movie with awesome-looking special effects from Disney! Sign me up!" I thought. I almost posed it up right away, as truly cool fantasy movies are few and far between. So, check this out:

Looks pretty cool, huh!? Here's the catch, though. The Bridge to Terabithia: Not a fantasy story. I never read the books, but it's apparently about two kids, they play in the woods, one dies, the other's sad, and that's okay. The End. Where's the giant? The army of fairies? The robot arms? Apparently it's some kind of metaphor that happens at the very end.

SciFi.com discusses what sounds like a pretty brazen marketing ploy in depth, but apparently the film's director, Gabor Csupo, was not pleased.

"I believe it's a stretch, and it's a very difficult decision on Disney's part, but we the filmmakers had nothing to do with that promotion," said director Gabor Csupo (The Wild Thornberrys). "We don't really think that it's an appropriate way of selling the movie, but they're convinced that that's the way to get kids interested, and hopefully they will be positively surprised. If they are anticipating a Harry Potter movie, then we are in trouble. It is not a Harry Potter kind of a movie."

So, as I can't phrase it better myself, take it away Admiral. (This one's for you Timsy!)

Thanks for bringing this up - I feel a bit better about the movie now. The book is one of very few books that can make me cry like a little girl when I read it, even 20 years after I first read it.

I'm a little less worried that the movie will suck, now.

Personally I can't stand misleading trailers like that, but its all about the marketing with movie trailers. Have heard from a friend that the movie "Pan's Labyrinth" is similar in that it has a fantasy laden trailer but is a movie with a much smaller fantasy element. Havent seen it though, so its all second hand, heard it was a good movie nonetheless.

This book traumatized me when we read it in my fourth grade class. I was horrified when I heard they were making it into a movie...not because I thought it'd be bad...but because, like KevinQ, I know I'll end up crying my eyes out.

I just went and saw the movie last night actually. There wasn't as much fantasy, but it was still great nonetheless. And yes. . . I cried my eyes out. not a dry eye in the house. Very well done
