Game Of The Week: The Kobold Quarterly

kqcover3.jpg

What’s small, scaly, and fiercer than a Dragon? At the moment, I’d say the Kobold Quarterly! The new issue is smokin’ with fantastic articles like the Ecology of the Lich and an interview with Ed Greenwood. I’m still holding my breath for the Digital Initiative from those coast dwelling wizards to get going and already Wolfgang Baur has delivered not one but two excellent issues. With issue three shortly to be released, I'm looking forward the seemingly ever increasing heft of the upstart magazine (okay, try to pretend you’re not a size queen) and once it gets here it may very well replace Freshman as my bathroom reading for at least a week. Oh, did I mention a print edition was available? That’s right, no more trying to balance my laptop on the can!

As for quality of articles, the big names don’t disappoint, and most of the less known names were already establishing themselves in Dungeon and Dragon magazines when the transition back to Wizards was announced. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up on the DI or that venerable Dragon yet, but for right now, at least there’s a tiny little magazine of Kobolds and Dragons to give me my gaming fix.

I know we promised a closer look at this magazine some time ago when the first issue was still in the works, and I'm pleased to say the first two issues were fantastic! Eric Mona, former editor of Dragon, is even said to have dubbed the scrappy little magazine as "the spiritual successor to Dragon Magazine." Reading the magazine, I can see why! While I miss the full color artwork and meticulous layout of Dragon, Kobold Quarterly actually makes me a little nostalgic, reminding me poignantly of the Roger Moore era of Dragon. KQ releases as both PDF and print (subscribers can choose pdf or print, with print subscribers receiving both).

I happen to have an kobold informant in the mines, so for more details of what to expect in issue 3, look beyond the break!

some highlights of what to expect in the forthcoming Issue:

Arbeyach, Lord of the Locusts
by Ari Marmell
Buzzzz! The master of famine, decay, and bureaucracy strikes down his foes like a plague. Or possibly a swarm. Is there a plague template?

Star & Shadow Magic
The secret school of Zobeck magic, found nowhere else! The heavens part, the stars descend, and we reveal the secrets of this uniquely Zobeckian form of magery.

plus the Ecology of the Lich, an interview with Ed Greenwood, and Keith Baker does noir. As always, there are comics from Stan!, and Skip Williams answers questions from readers.
