Bas Lag RPG In The Works!

88newcrobuzon.jpg

I have returned from my week-long foray into (gasp) America—yet my vacation was a. gay enough (I went to Broadway to see Wicked!), b. Lovecraftian enough (I spent most of my time in New England) and c. tabletop-gamey enough (my uncle is an avid collector of European board games like Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Taj Mahal and Oltre Mare) that, really, it felt like fieldwork for this here blog.

But the thing that currently excites me the most is not the memories of New England, but rather the promise of New Crobuzon: that's right, an RPG set in China Miéville's flippin' amazing world of Bas-Lag (seen in the novels Perdido Street Station, The Scar and Iron Council) is in the works!

The terribly shrewd Adamant Entertainment is teaming up with Miéville himself to create Tales of New Crobuzon, and is hoping to give the dystopian weird wonderful city nestled in between the ribs of a long-forgotten enormous creature "the level of detail and attention that it deserves." Go to the company's forum here to talk about the game, and also to sign up as a freelance artist and/or playtester. If you're a big China Miéville fan like me (The Scar is one of my favourite fantasy/sci-fi/steampunk/horror/pirate/weird-lit novels of all time, and Iron Council has a fantastically well-realized gay main character which is a sad rarity in the genre) this is the chance of a lifetime!

Read Perdito Street Station, and loved it even though it took a bit to get into. Havent read anything else of his, but its on my "to read" list. While reading though I was struck by how interesting it would be to incorporate alot of his material/ideas into a RPG setting.
