White Wolf to WotC: "Bring It"

93exalted.jpg

In a bid to gain D&D's audience, White Wolf has just instituted a program called "Graduate your Game 2008," in which players can receive free copies of the Exalted Second Edition corebook. The catch? You have to send in your old copy of the Dungeons & Dragons Revised Third Edition (3.5) Players Guide.

After doing this, you get your book, and a free poster and diploma to signify that you've "graduated." "You won't ever want to search another 10 x 10 room again," they say.

There are only 2500 books available, so stores have to act fast. For more details, go here.

It all smacks of the type of "you can only go out with me if you stop hanging out with HIM" kind of drama that I'm sure some of us have experienced. But still, it's kind of delicious. You better work!

This seems like a popular interpretation of the promotion.

But to me, it just kind of seems like: "Hey, you're probably going to be buying the 4E books in a few months anyway, so why not turn in your 3.5 PHB and pick up the Exalted 2E book?"

I mean, as someone pointed out, at least by making people give up something, they've got a better chance of not having people just pick up the free book and then go home and never read it. Requiring the turn-in, limits the pool to people who might actually care to read and get into the Exalted game, as opposed to people who would just pick it up cause it's free.

Anyway, I've already got my Exalted 2E book, so it doesn't much matter to me. But I do encourage people to check out the game, it's a pretty slick setting and rules set, if you ask me. Definitely different from D&D, and in some ways better or more interesting.

I'm digging in my heels on 3.5 for now, but seriously considering Exalted when my players tire of it. Of course, I might just play Pokethulhu all the time.

Yeah, and what a BIG surprise that is. Given that White Wolf's target audience has always been angsty teenage boys who listen to Cradle of Filth and could use a good course of 'sod off and grow up', is it any wonder they're acting as if they're run by them as well? ;)

Exalted is a fantastic game. This is well worth the swap. I talked about this a few days ago on my blog. I'm all for it.

White Wolf taking advantage of another company putting out a NEW version of an already existing game? "Pot", meet "Kettle"...I've bought so many iterations of the same game from White Wolf it's insane. Still, Exalted is a GOOD game...

*cough* 4th ED *cough*

Yet another silly move by WW... Not to mention, as bad as D&D is for rules issues and constantly crapping out lame material... The Wolf could still teach the Dragon how to bilk a customer base..

1. Go to a used book store and buy a copy of 3.5e D&D for $10.
2. Send in $10 copy of 3.5e for a free $39.99 2e copy of Exalted.
